Walking down Obispo in Old Havana, trying to escape the boredom we felt due to the lack of electricity, we stopped in front of San Gerónimo University. A musician with his trumpet caught our attention. His name was Felipe Hernández. We asked him to play a song or two. It was so captivating to hear the instrument’s melody drift across the plaza. Afterward, we gave him a tip, and Felipe chatted with us about his life and motivations. Felipe said goodbye to the rhythm of an international smash hit. We continued on our way, leaving him playing “Lagrimas Negras” for other curious tourists who were also captivated by Cuban music. Only El Grito brings you stilt-walking trumpet playing historians.
